‘black’, in this case, refers not to the woman’s race, but instead is synonymous of ‘ugly’, in the same way ‘fair’ would mean ‘pretty’. As a result this quote is more telling of Iago’s attitudes to women than race.
It is suggestive of his atittude towards beauty and promiscuity, valuing intelligence above the art of seduction.
