analysis

A

At first it is clear Shelia is guilty and repentful, the audience have great hope she will instill the Inspector’s teachings.
However she doesn’t explicitly say no the Gerald when he asks if the engagement is still on. This shows that Shelia is likely to go back to her relationship with Gerald.
Shelia doesn’t do this out of choice but rather out of necessity. It is clear through the events of the play that all men (especially the upper class) abuse their power and have affairs with other women. Shelia has no choice but to marry one of these men in order to survive in society (patriarchal no other income/choices). Eric’s actions of forcing himself onto Eva show that there are men who do much more terrible things than Gerald, so Shelia is more inclined to remain engaged to him, as he seems like the best out of limited options. Also Shelia praises his honesty about the affair, another compelling factor to stay with him.

22
Q

what do the Birlings have to share

A

“we’ll have to share out guilt”

23
Q

2 characters judging the Inspector’s legitimacy

A

Gerlad - “that man wasn’t a police officer”

24

A

“hoax”
