S/S for abdominal pain
hypotension, nausea &/or vomiting, bleeding from mouth or rectum
causes of hypotension associated with abdominal pain
- vascular emergencies (i.e. ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm
- ruptured ectopic pregnancies
- bowel obstructions causing fluids to build up
- traumatic damage to slid organ (i.e. spleen, kidney, liver)
- gastrointestinal bleeding
upper abdominal pain
everything above umbilicus
lower abdominal pain
everything below umbilicus
male age group to receive 12 lead ecg presenting with upper abdominal pain
35 years or older
female age group to receive 12 lead ecg presenting with upper abdominal pain
45 years or older
females of childbearing age presenting with lower abdominal pain should be treated as possible what ?
ectopic pregnancy until proven otherwise
what can help understand the reasons for patients abdominal pain ?
past medical/ surgical history or current medications
starts in the posterior flank and radiates around to lower abdomen on the side of the pain and never crosses the midline
renal colic (kidney stones)
starts in the right upper quadrant but may move around the upper abdomen into the mid back
gallbladder pain
possible causes of right lower quadrant pain
- kidney stones
- ectopic pregnancy
- classic appendicitis
pain starts in mid upper abdomen or around the umbilicus and later moves to the right lower quadrant
classic appendicitis
possible cause of left upper quadrant pain
pancreatitis
associated with alcohol abuse or gallbladder stones
pancreatitis
possible causes of left lower quadrant pain
- diverticulitis
- ectopic pregnancy
- kidney stones
