Adverse Drug Reactions Flashcards
Separating beneficial(therapeutic) effects from toxic(adverse) effects
Clinical selectivity
Diminished responsiveness to a drug’s effects shortly after it is started (acute)
-Rapid Desensitization
Tachyphylazxis
Decreased responsiveness to a drug’s effects as a consequence of prolonged drug administration
-Gradual Desensitization
Tolerance
Hyperreactivity that is mediated by immunologic mechanisms
Hypersensitivity
That the unwanted effect in question is insignificant or occurs via a pathway that is to one side of the principal action of the drug; such implications are frequently erroneous
Side effect
The concentration range of drug that provides therapeutic efficacy with minimal toxicity
Therapeutic Window
How selective the drug is in producing its desired effects versus its adverse effects
Therapeutic Index (TI)
The study of genetic factors determining the response to drugs
Pharmacogenomics
Drug reactions that occur rarely and unpredictably amongst the population
Idiosyncratic response
The intensity of a drug’s effects is diminished or increased compared with the effect seen in most individuals
Hypo- or Hyperreactivity
