Aerobic respiration Flashcards
1
Q
What is respiration?
A
The cellular process of realising energy from food through a series of enzyme controlled reaction
2
Q
What happens to the energy made?
A
Some is used to produce ATP, the rest is lost as heat
3
Q
What is ATP?
A
A molecule which is the energy currency of every single living thing
4
Q
What energy activities require energy
A
- cell division
- synthesis of proteins from amino acids
- active transport
- muscle cell concentration (in animal bodies)
- transition of nerve impulses (in animal bodies)
5
Q
Aerobic Respiration Stage 1
A
- glucose enters by cell diffusion
- cytoplasm breaks it down into Pyruvate molecules
- 1 glucose molecule has enough energy is released to produce 2 ATP molecules
6
Q
What are 2 important things that happen in stage 1
A
The breakdown is catalysed by enzymes and this stage doesn’t require oxygen
7
Q
Aerobic respiration Stage 2
A
- if oxygen is present pyruvate moves into the mitochondria
- it’s broken down into carbon dioxide and water
- enough energy is released to yield a large number of ATP molecules
8
Q
What is the word equation for stage 2 of aerobic respiration?
A
Glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + energy
