What is De-individuation?

A

A psychological state where an individual loses their personal identity and takes on identity of social group e.g. in a crowd or wearing a uniform/mask. The result may be to free the individual from constraints of social norms.

A

Aggressive or violent behaviour that takes place within the social context of a prison or other formal organised settings.

What are dispositional explanations?

A

Any explanation of behaviour that highlights importance of individual’s personality (e.g. their disposition), these are contrasted with situational explanations.

A

Any explanation that identifies cause of behaviour as existing within the environment, may include other people. Contrasted with Situational explanations.
