Class A

A

18000’ MSL to 60000’ MSL; Overlying the water within 12 NM off the 48 continuous states (including Alaska); not depicted on the sectional; IFR rating, equipment, and rules; ATC clearance required, Mode C with altitude reporting transponder

Class B

A

SFC to 10000’ or the needs of a particular area; depicted as a solid blue line on the sectional; must hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate (Student Pilot may enter specified B airspace with proper endorsement); ATC clearance is required before entering; 2 way radio, mode C altitude reporting transponder (30NM), must receive explicit ATC clearance. Speed: 250kts below 10000’ MSL, 200kts in the underlying airspace or in VFR corridor.

(FAR 91.177); generally the airspace above the nation’s largest/busiest airports

Class C

A

Inner core is 5NM radius, SCF to 4000’ AGL (or as depicted); outer core is 10NM, 1200 AGL to 4000’ AGL. Airspeed restriction is 200kts within 4NM of primary airport SFC up to 2500’ AGL and 250kts anywhere else with in the C airspace. No specific certification required; depicted as solid magenta line on a sectional chart. 2 way radio, mode C with altitude reporting transponder, two way radio communication must be established before entering (may enter if ATC acknowledge call sing). Above class C needs mode C.

Class D

A

4 NM radius, SFC to 2500’ AGL (or as depicted) 200kts airspeed restriction; no specific certification required; two way radio, depicted as dashed blue on sectional chart; Pilots arriving aircraft should contact the control towers and give position, altitude, destination, and requests; radio contact should be initiated before crossing boundaries as to not create conflict (10–12NM)

Class E

A

Controlled airspace that is not A, B, C, D. Extends up to but no including 18000’ MSL and is depicted as dashed magenta (starts from SFC), fading blue (start from 1200’ AGL) fading magenta (starts from 700’ AGL). Speed 250kts below 10000’ MSL, Mach 1 above 10000 MSL’.

Class G

A

Uncontrolled airspace. Typically SFC to the base of overlying class E airspace (700’ AGL or 1200 AGL’), but can extend to 14500’ MSL, or as charted on a sectional chart.

Note: G and E airspace dimension are both depicted with the magenta fade, blue zipper line, or a blue fade, but depending upon the side of the boundary will determine the class of airspace and altitude.
