Allelic Frequency Flashcards
What is relative allele frequency
The number of times that the allele occurs in a gene pool compared to the number of times other alleles for the same gene occur
What is a gene pool
All of the genes that are present in a population
How do new allele arise?
Through random mutations
In genetic terms what is the definition of evolution
Any change in the allele frequency in a population
If the frequency of the allele changes, then the population is evolving
What is genetic equilibrium
If the number of the alleles does not change from one generation to the next, then the relative allelic frequency has not changed and evolution is not occurring even if the phenotypic frequency is changing
What is happening if the number of the alleles is changing
Evolution is occurring
Allelic frequencies cannot change if there is not genetic variation within a species
What are sources of genetic variation
Mutations - any change in a sequence of DNA and occur because of mistakes in replication, radiation, chemicals, and viruses
Gene shuffling - the random rearrangement and recombination if chromosomes
Thus sexual reproduction is a major source
When does gene shuffling occur
During meiosis due to independent assortment
Crossing over in meiosis
Randomness of fertilization
How is inheritable variation expressed
By single gene traits or by polygenic traits
