Q

what is a zwitter ion and where do they exist?

A

a molecule with both positive and negatvie ion

they exist on the amino acid isoelectric point

Q

what is the isoelectric point?

A

the isoelectric point is the pH where the average charge is 0.It is dependent on the R group

7
Q

how does ph affect zwitter ion?

A

if the pH is lower than the isoelectric point it means H+ is donated to amino acid
(O-C=O ) -> -HOC=O
if the pH is higher than than isoelectric point it means that that the amino acid donates the H+ NH3+ -> NH2

9
Q

describe the steps of TLC

A

draw base line with pencil
silica for stationary point
place plate in solvent (baseline slightly above solvent) cover with glass lid
leave until solvent had moved to near top of plate
take off and mark solvent front

10
Q

as amino acids are colourless what are the 3 methods used to see the TLC

A

spray with flurosecent dye then shine with UV light. colourless spots shown and can be drawn around
place the chromatogram in a sealed jaw with few iodine crytals the iodine vapour sticks to the plate turning it purple
ninhydrine also acts a locating agent and can be sprayed on

13
Q

why is an enzyme not guarenteed to work ?

A

most amino acids are optically active this means that an enzyme has to be stereospecific to fit the substrate and catalyse the reaction

15
Q

how is the phosphate sugar backbone formed?

A

condensational polymerisation between phosphate and sugar removing water
phosphodiester bonds are formed and water is elminated

16
Q

how do nucleotides hydrogen bond?

A

hydrogen bonds only form between a delta positive H and an electronegative element with a lone pair e.g O,N only at the correct distance

17
Q

how many hydrogen bonds do A,T and C,G form?

A

A,T - 2

C,G -3

18
Q

why can no other base pair?

A

the partially charged atoms would be too close and repel each other or not get close enough for a hydrogen bond to form

19
Q

what is cis plantain?

A
anti cancer drug
square planar complex
platinum metal ion
2 ammonia ligands
and 2 chloride ion ligands
20
Q

what does cis- plantin do?

A

binds to DNA in cancer cells

as it binds it stops cell division killing it

21
Q

how does cis plantin stop cell division?

A

Cl- are easily displaced due to the weak coordinate bond and detatch from the complex
the platinum can then bond to the nitrogen on guanine
the second cl- ion can do the same bonding to another guanine
this causes distortion in the DNA strand so it cannot unwind and therefore cant copy

22
Q

what is the negative of cis plantin and solution

A

it can also attack healthy cells stopping them from reproducing
e.g blood cells affecting immune system and increase the risk of infection and kidney damage
this can be reduced by using lower doses and more targeted
