Aminoglycosides Flashcards
aminoglycosides
group of powerful antibiotics used to treat serious infection caused by gram negative aerobic bacilli.
Aminoglycoside examples
gentamicin
tobramycin
Therapeutic actions and indications of aminoglycosides
bactericidal-inhibit protein synthesis in gram negative bacteria. used for infections such as: pseudomonas, e. coli, proteus, klebsiella, citrobacter, staphylococcus.
Aminoglycosides
used for treatment of serious infections that are susceptible to penicillin when penicillin is contraindicated.
Aminoglycosides pharmacokinetics
poorly absorbed in GI. Rapidly absorbed after IM injection. Peak level 1 hr. H/L 2-3 hours
*cross placenta
excreted unchanged in urine
Gentamicin
many forms-opthalmic, topical, IV, intrathecal, impregnated beads on surgical wire, liposomal injection
Streptomycin
very toxic to eighth cranial nerve and kidney
Tobramycin
IM or IV. Ophthalmic and nebulizer
Aminoglycosides CI
Known allergies, renal or hepatic disease, pre existing hearing loss, active infection with herpes or mycobacterial infection, pregnancy
