Anatomy Basics Flashcards
Thoracic Cavity
Chest, heart, lungs
Abdominopelvic Cavity
Abdominal: small intestine, stomach, spleen, kidney
Pelvic: bladder, rectum
What is homeostasis?
The body’s ability to regulate its internal environment
What are two examples of homeostasis?
Negative feedback loop and metabolism
What is metabolism?
A chemical process that occurs your whole life. Energy we get from our food fuels out metabolism
Dorsal Cavity
Cranial: brain
Spinal: spine
Metabolism consists of which two processes?
Catabolism and anabolism
What is catabolism?
The breaking down of large to small molecules, resulting in energy
What is anabolism?
The building up / storing of small to large molecules
Things that speed up your metabolism:
- Drink more water
- Exercise, especially intervals
- Drink green tea
- Eat spicy foods
- Eat more fiber and protein
- Snack throughout the day
What is the negative feedback loop?
- 98.6 body temp
- temp goes up
- hypothalamus sends out hormones
- sweat, cooling process
- temp goes down
- hypothalamus goes back
Difference between anatomy and physiology?
Anatomy = structure of the body parts Physiology = functions and relationships of the body parts
Latin meaning of the word anatomy?
To cut apart
What is the initial reference point?
Anatomical position
What is the torso portion called on the body?
Axial, with the skull, ribs, vertebrae
