Anatomy Of Cell - Cytoplasm Flashcards
Cytoplasm - three major elements
Cytosol - liquid within a cell (cytoplasm contains liquid and organelles)
Inclusions - chemical substances
Organelles
Cytoskeleton
Protein structure (extends throughout the cytoplasm)
Main function is structure and support for the cell
Provides intracellular transport
Ribosomes
Make proteins
Either free in cytoplasm or attached to rough endoplasmic reticulum
Endoplasmic reticulum - what are the two types?
Sends molecules to golgi apparatus for further processing
Rough ER and smooth ER
Rough ER
Involved in protein producing and transporting (molecules transported away can be taken in vesicles)
Smooth ER
Synthesizes lipids, and detoxifies drugs and toxins
Golgi apparatus
Processes, sorts and packages proteins and lipids for transports to final destination within or outside cell
Mitochondria - power house of the cell
Makes ATP energy (to power cell) during cellular respiration process
Pathway of protein out of cell
- Nucleus = provides instructions from DNA
- Ribosome = made by ribosome
- Rough ER = transports vesicle to Golgi apparatus
- Golgi apparatus = sorting takes place. Then sent from a vesicle to cell membrane
Lysosome
Membranous bags packaged by golgi apparatus from rough ER
Contains enzymes that digest foreign invaders (bacteria and viruses)
Break down waste material
Peroxisomes
Contains enzyme catalyst that break down amino acids / fatty acids and detoxify harmful substances (hydrogen peroxide)
