Anatomy of eye Flashcards
Tissues surrounding the eye as a whole including muscles, eyelids, TEL, lacrimal glands, fat, nerves, vessels etc…
Adnexa
What are 4 rectus muscles of the eye and what is their innervation?
dorsal, ventral, and medial –> innervated by CN III oculomotor
lateral –> innervated by CN VI abducens
What are the 2 oblique muscles, their innervation, and direction in which they move they globe of the eye?
Dorsal oblique –> innervated by CN IV (trochlear) –> rotates the dorsal globe medioventral
Ventral oblique –> innervated by CN III (oculomotor) –> rotates ventral globe mediodorsally
What is the innervation to the retractor muscle?
CN VI (abducens) and a smooth muscle cone is innervated by sympathetic fibers
*not found in the bird!
What are the 3 layers to the globe of the eyeball?
- Outer fibrous = cornea and sclera
- middle vascular = uvea - including iris, ciliary body, and choroid
- Inner nervous = retina
*note - the tapetum lies in between the choroid and retina in species/coat colors that have them.
What is the lens?
a transparent, refractile disk located behind the iris.
How is the lens held in position?
by lens zonules which come off of the ciliary process
What is the lens made of and how is it nourished?
Protein and water ( with no innervaiton or blood supply);
Nourished by the aqueous and vitreous humor!
What produces the aqueous humor and where does it live in the eye?
Aqueous humor is produced by the ciliary processes behind the iris –> passes through the pupil and lives in the anterior chamber
How does aqueous humor exit the eye?
at the iridocorneal angle where the iris and cornea meet
_________ is the largest area of the eye.
Vitreous
________ ________ is a clear gel like substance that lives between the lens and retina
Vitreous humor
What is the function of the vitreous humor?
provides nutritional and structural support to the lens and the retina
Where to the ganglia and axons of the retina come from?
They converge from the optic nerve
What layers must be transparent to visualize the retina?
cornea, aqueous humor, lens, and vitreous
