Anatomy of the Knee Flashcards
What is the knee an articulation between?
Distal femur and proximal tibia
What type of joint is the knee?
Synovial bicondylar hinge joint
Where is the intercondylar fossa located?
Between the two condyles on the posterior side of the femur
What are the TIBIAL condyles also known as?
Tibial plateau
What is the medical term for bow-legged?
Varus deformity
What is Varus deformity?
Deformity in the angle between the femur and the tibia (less than 15 degrees)
Tibia is medially displaced (inwards facing) so knees are pushed apart
What is Valgus deformity?
Deformity in the ankle between the femur and tibia (more than 15 degrees)
Tibia is laterally displaced so knees are brought together
What can Varus and Valgus deformity eventually lead to?
Joint degeneration
What are the two groups of strong ligaments of the knee?
Extracapsular and Intracapsular
What are the extracapsular and intracapsular ligaments?
Extracapsular = Medial and Lateral collateral
Intracapsular = Anterior and Posterior cruciate
What is the lateral (fibular) collateral ligament and where are the two ends of it?
A strong round cord that prevents medial displacement of the tibia.
Lateral epicondyle and fibular head
What can a tear in the lateral collateral ligament lead to?
Varus deformity
What is the medial (tibial) collateral ligament?
A broad flat band that reinforces the joint capsule and prevents lateral displacement of the tibia.
What can a tear of the medial collateral ligament lead
Valgus deformity
What does the medial collateral ligament connect, and what is it attached to between these two structures?
Medial surface of the tibia and medial epicondyle
Attached to the medial meniscus
