Q

Why cant electron transport chain work without oxygen

A

Because oxygen is the last proton acceptor

Q

Why cant anerobic fermentation occur past glycolsis like in aerobic ( kreb cycle… and so on)

A

Because the oxygen cant work as a final electron acceptor for the electron transport chain it wont work and therefore the loaded NADH and FADH2 cant be unloaded and used again for krebs cycle to begin. So the krebs cycle cant function.

Q

Why do cells even need to go past the glyclosis stage in anerobic fermentation to make pyruvate into ethanol and c02 for an example?

A

Because in the process of glycolsis we produce loaded NADH. Going further and producing ethanol and CO2 unload the coenzymes and make NAD+ which is needed again for glucose to be broken down. So NADH must be recycled to prevent running out of NAD+

Q

What produces more ATP efficently in aerobic and anerobic

A

Aerobic cellualr respiration is more efficient as it produces 36-38 atp

Q

What produces ATP at a fast rate

A

Fermentation is much faster than aerobic cellular respiration as it does not need to under go kreb cycle and the electron transport chain.

Q

What respiration is more sustainabile

A

Aerobic cellular respiration can be sustained indefinitly and produce as many atp as needed, but fermentation cannot as the products make from it are toxic to cells, like lactic acid.
