What does Nutrition include?
1) Ingestion
2) Digestion
3) Absorption
4) Assimilation
5) Egestion
What is the function of the mouth, pharynx and Oesophagus?
The mouth is for ingestion, the pharynx moves the food from the mouth to the Oesophagus and the Oesophagus moves the food to the stomach by peristalsis
What is the function of the stomach and small intestine?
The stomach churns and digests food physically and chemically and the small intestine absorbs nutrients
What are the functions of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum
Duodenum: Receives chyme, bile and pancreatic juice
Jejunum: Bring about chemical digestion
Ileum: Final digestion and absorption
What are the functions of the rectum and anus?
The rectum stores faeces and the anus is used for egestion
What are the functions of the salivary glands and the tounge?
The salivary glands secrete saliva which contains salivary amylase and the tounge assists in chewing and tasting
What is the function of the pancreas
Secrete pancreatic juice and insulin
What is the function of the gallbladder
Temporarily store bile from the liver
What is the cardiac sphincter
A valve leading into the stomach, keeping it closed
What is the Pyloric sphincter
A valve that closes the bottom of the stomach and leads to the duodenum
What are the functions of the LIVER?
1) Make bile
2) Regulate substances (glucose to glycogen)
3) Make vitamin A from carotene
4) Detoxify
5) Form cholesterol
6) Store fat soluble vitA and D
What are the functions of BILE?
1) Emulsify fat gobbles
2) Provide an alkaline medium for action of enzymes
3) Helps with absorption of fats
