antimicrobials Flashcards
what are antimicrobials
chemical substances that have the capacity to kill or inhibit the growth or microorganisms
natural antibiotics
produced by microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria
semi - synthetic drugs
isolated from natural sources, by then chemically modified in a laboratory
synthetic drugs
compounds that are completely artificial and are synthesized in a laboratory
broad - spectrum drugs
effective against both gram - possitive and gram - negative bacteria and tend to have higher toxicity to the host
narrow-spectrum drugs
effective against a limited group of microbes and exhibit lower toxicity to the host
antibiotics
will treat gram-positive bacteria such as staph, and strep
will treat gram-negative bacteria such as e. coli, salmonella, coliforms
antibiotic resistance
occurs when bacteria change in some way that reduces or eliminates the effectiveness of the agent used to cure or prevent injection
cell wall agents
inhibition of cell wall synthesis
protein synthesis agents
inhibition of protein synthesis
nucleic acid agents
inhibition of nucleic acid enzymes
cell wall agents
penicillins
cephalosporins
bacitracin
vancomycin
Penicillins
inhibit cell wall synthesis - Beta-lactam ring produces weak cell walls
cephalosporins
interfere with cell wall synthesis
bacitracin
inhibits protein cell wall synthesis
