1
Q

Give a suggestion for reducing risk taking behaviour caused by impulsivity

A

Stressful childhood results in less serotonin in the cerebral spinal.

This could be prevented by giving better education, and intervening with parents who are at risk of neglecting or maltreating their children by practitioners giving support .

Q

Give research showing how training for expected mothers affects impulsivity in their children.

A

A programme was carried out in 1998 which involved nurses visiting expectant mothers before the birth and providing training for parents on how to cope with stressors that might otherwise lead to a stressful experience for the child.

Results showed that children performed better in school and showed lower rates in conduct disorder which could result in impulsivity.

Q

What research shows how educating children on the dangers of risk taking behaviours helps them avoid them?

A

A driving programme that has been adopted in the USA that involved not give adolescents a full licence until they have completed a probationary period during which their driving rights were restricted, such as not being able to driving at night

This was based on the idea that, in early exposure to new experiences, the learning should be completed in lower risk conditioned until mastery.

The program found a significant reduction in crashes of adolescent drivers, after about 6 months.

Q

Give an example where the social context of a child can influence children to take risks.

A

Peer pressure may increase the reward of taking a risk and may make the risk seem more worth taking.

Ensuring that teenagers have positive social networks such as family, peers and school can provide protection against risky behaviours.
