2 features =

  • Behaviour is influenced by thoughts that can be both conscious and non-conscious internal mental processes
  • Models can be used to provide testable theories about mental processes and can be studied scientifically and inferences can be made

2 limitations =

  • Research findings indicate factors other than internal mental events as a cause of behaviour
  • Process of inference may be a ‘leap to far’ in explaining thinking

Differences :

  • Negativity of Freud in relation to the positive outlook of humanistic psychology
  • Determinism VS free will
  • Directive VS non-directive approach to therapy
  • Emphasis on repressed thoughts and emotions VS emphasis on subjective experiences of the present
