Arousal Flashcards
1
Q
arousal
A
intensity of our own emotion, motivation and behaviour or the drive to achieve.
2
Q
Drive theory
A
- relationship between arousal and performance is linear
- as arousal increases performance increases.
drive reduction = drive reduced if performer loses motivation
3
Q
Positives and negatives of drive theory
A
+ easy to interpret
+ muscles warm up so performance levels increase
- doesn’t apply to all sports
- arousal is affected by other factors
4
Q
Inverted U theory of arousal
A
- optimal zone of functioning
- after this performance will decline and performer becomes anxious.
- more skilled performer the higher there level of optimal arousal.
5
Q
Catastrophe theory of arousal
A
- theory shows a much more dramatic decline in performance when arousal is raised above the optimal level.
6
Q
Somatic arousal and Cognitive arousal
A
as somatic arousal increases so will performance quality.
- if there are high levels of cognitive and somatic arousal the performance will decline dramatically.
