A

A tondo (plural tondi) is a renaissance term for a circular work of art either a painting or sculpture. The Italian word, rotondo, means round. Small portrait miniatures do not classify as a tondo.

Who is this and why was he important

A

Sebastiano del Piombo

1485-1547

Born in Venice as Sebastiano Luciano, he trained with Bellini and Giorgione then went to Rome

With the death of Raphael he became the leading painter in Rome. The Pope made him Keeper of the Seal so he got the nickname Piombo which means “of the lead” His job title was Piombatore

He had a friendship with Michelangelo who advised him and provided some drawings for his paintings they would later fallout

Giorgione helped found the Venetian school with Titian that achieves much of its effect through color and mood
