Q

How is the character of Arthur Kipps presented at the funeral of Alice Drablow with quotes?

A

At the Funeral of Alice Drablow, the Character of Arthur Kipps in presented in many ways:

At the funeral, He sees WIB he is “consumed with the desire to find out exactly what it was I had seen” He is curious with the Woman in Black and is described as “consumed with desire” which illustrates that he is determined to find out exactly why that individual is at the funeral.

At the funeral is evidently changed .
“I did not believe in ghosts, or rather until this day i had not” He is shown as being changed with the quote “ or rather until this day” which illustrates that he is aware of the time of the sudden change in his beliefs. This quote has an effect on the reader as we do not understand why he has stopped believing ghosts.

The theme of change continues. Arthur says that “ [I glanced] once of twice … over my shoulder” he is superstious and thinks that the Woman in Black might be following him.

Q

How is Arthur Kipps illustrated after his encounter with the Woman in Black?

A

After the encounter with the Woman in Black his character changes yet again:

He feels like his whole life has passed:
“ I felt older like a man who was being put on trial” Men on trial know that they have little of the lives left. They except their fate a bit like how Arthur feels in this situation.

Arthur is shown as being grateful when he is invited to Samuel Daily’s house. Afterwards, he says that “ they both made me feel welcome” This contradicts the atmosphere at Eel Marsh House which is unwelcoming.

Q

How is the character of Arthur Kipps illustrated later on in the novel?

A

Arthur turns to religion in his time of need as
“I prayed fervently with a new awakened zeal” His new awakened zeal is found because of his encounter with the Woman in Black. The only way in his eyes to stop the supernatural is to pray to a different force of the supernatural which in this case is God.

Arthur sees life in a whole new perspective. He sees marriage and other worries as “ mundane considerations” The word “ mundane” means dull. this illustrates that he wants to have more enjoyment in his life and no longer worry about worries such as wealth etc.

Arthur wants his story to end
“ enough” illustrates how fed up and angry he is with the Woman in Black for putting him through what he has gone through.
