How does ATP release energy?

-energy is needed when bonds are broken + released when bonds are formed
-energy is needed to break the bond to 3rd phosphate group
-lots of energy is released when bond is broken
-breaking bond = hydrolysis - ATP hydrolyses the reaction to form ADP
-ADP + phosphate that are released are recycled back to ATP
