Q

How does the Internal Working Model affect future relationships?

A
  • It determines the kinds of qualities brought to future relationships, both positive and negative.
  • Someone with a positive IWM may bring positive qualities (e.g. love, trust, respect) whilst someone with a negative IWM may bring negative qualities (e.g. jealousy, controlling, being emotionally distant)

Q

Describe Hazan & Shaver’s Findings

A
  • Individuals who were securely attached formed better quality and longer-lasting relationships, compared to those were insecurely attached who tended to struggle to form and maintain relationships
  • Those with an insecure avoidant attachment type struggled with being emotionally distant.
  • Those with an insecure resistant attachment type struggled with the fear that their partner didn’t love them back or would leave them

Describe Bowlby’s Maternal Attachment Type Study

A
  • Assessed 99 mothers and their babies using The Strange Situation
  • Found that the mothers attachment type matched that of both their baby and their mother
  • This suggests that attachment type is generational, perhaps via the Internal Working Model.
