Audio 3 Cross Hearing Flashcards

1
Q

What is cross hearing?

A

Non test ear is picking up sound from the test ear, mostly occurs in unilateral loss, or asymmetrical loss but can happen at any time.

Q

State rule 2 of masking?

A

Masking is needed at any frequency where the not-masked bc threshold is better than the air conduction threshold of either ear by 10dB or more.

The worse ear (by AC) would then be the test ear and the better ear would be the non test ear to be masked.

Q

State the procedure for masking?

A

Set the masking for the non test ear ac threshold.

Find the threshold of the test ear.

Increase masking by +10dB
Refind the test ear threshold

Continue until there is a minimum of 3 results the same (plateau)
But complete at least 4 times

Q

Instructions to patient for masking rule 2?

A

I’m going to play a noise this time, ignore it and press the button when you hear the beep as before.

Raise your hand if you wish to stop

Q

Why would you reverse rule 2 in masking?

A

If masked results stay the same as original or only increase by 5-10dB

Q

State Rule 1 of masking

A

Masking is needed at any frequency where the difference between the left and right not-masked ac thresholds is 40dB (for headphones) or 55dB for inserts

Q

State rule 3 of masking

A

Masking will be needed additionally where rule 1 has not been applied, but where the b-c threshold of one ear is more acute by 40dB (headphones) or 55dB (inserts) or more than the not masked ac threshold attributed to the other ear.
