leo tolstoy had an unusual life almost as notorious as his literary works. he was born into an affluent family and inhertied a laarge sum of that welath including the family estate at 19. he soon set out trying toi improve the lives of the peasants who lived on his land. after the publication of his two major masterpieces WandP (1865-69) and AnnaK |(1875-77) he fell into deep despair which entailed him questioning the value of his life and previous works. he found salvation in mystical spirituality. he gave up small luxuries and took up working in the fields, his beliefs about overcoming evil helped inspire activists ex martin luther king jr

the son of travelling actors, edgar allan poe lost his mother at an early age. he was raised by a wealthy family in Virginia named allan form which he got his middle name. after winning a writing competition with his wor k ms in a bottle, poe became a literary success, winning fame but not fortune. he died in poverty at the age of 40.

a native of columbus ohio james thrurber went to work for the us state department after college but soon afterwards he found his true calling and became a humorist, writing essats and drawing cartiib fir the new yorker a famous magazine. thurber won fame for his whimsical depiction of human and animal silliness. by the 1940s howvee his failing eyesight forced him to reduce the number of illiyustrations he produced. by 1952 he went almost totally blind but continued to contribute stories ana articles to magazines
