Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
What kind of control does the ANS have?
Involuntary, subconscious
What kind of neurons are in the ANS?
Only motor neurons
What 3 things does the Ans control?
Cardiac muscle
Smooth muscle
Glands
What does the ANS release and why?
Norepinephrine and acetylcholine they can be inhibitory or excitatory
Sympathetic?
Norepinephrine “fight/flight” “e” exercise, excitement embarrassment emergency.
Effect of sympathetic
Digestion stops
Heart rate, metabolic rate, respiration all increase
Parasympathetic?
AcH “rest/digest” digest defecate dieresis
Effects of parasympathetic?
Heart rate blood pressure and respiratory rates are slow pupils constrict
Parts of reflex arc
Receptor-sensory neuron- integration- motor neuron- effector
Difference between visceral and somatic reflex arc?
Visceral has 2 neurons in the motor pathway (para and sympathetic)
Also visceral sensory receptor is in an organ vs the skin
Why is there referred pain?
Because visceral pain travels along the same pathway as somatic pain fibers
What is dynamic antagonism?
The para and sympathetic divisions work together but oppose each other
It allows for precise control over visceral activity
Sympathetic Tone:
Sympathetic always controls blood pressure so it keeps blood vessels in a continuous state of partial constriction
What to do if we need blood pressure to rise?
The sympathetic fibers fire more rapidly to constrict blood vessels
What to do if we need to lower blood pressure?
Sympathetic fibers fire less rapid to dilate blood vessels
