Axial Skeleton Flashcards
Axial Skeleton
Skull, Ribes, spine, sacrum
appendicular skeleton
appendages
articulation
2 bones atached by a joint
disarticulated skeleton
bones not attached by a joint
fissure
narrow separation in 2 bones- slit like opening
foramen
round/oval opening through a bone
meatus
canal like passageway
fossa
shallow basin like depression
sinus
space within a bone filled with air and lined with mucous membrane
condyle
rounded articular projection
head of a bone
bony expansion carried on a narrow neck
Marking of Frontal Bone-SKull
frontal sinus, supraorbital notch (foramen)
frontal sinus
cavities inside frontal bone lined with mucosa and filled with air. Marking of frontal bone
supraorbital notch(foramen)
opening above each eye orbit for blood vessels and nerves. marking of the frontal bone
Temporal bone markings
- external auditory meatus(canal)
- mastoid process,
- styloid process
- zygomatic process,
- jugular foramen,
- petrous portion
external auditory meatus
Marking of the temporal bone. canal leading to the eardrum and middle ear
mastoid process
rough projection inferior and posterior to external auditory meatus. attachment site for neck muscles.
(big bump under ear- can tell between men/women)
styloid process
marking of temporal bone. smaller bone inferier to external auditory meatus, attachement site for muscles and LIGAMENTS of neck.
smaller than the mastoid process.
zygomatic process
bridge like projection joining the zygomatic bone of the face to form the zygomatic arch( cheekbone). marking of the temporal bone
jugular foramen
marking of the temporal bone. opening for jugular vein
petrous portion
forms the lateral portion of the base of the skull. marking of the temporal bone
Parietal bone
bone of the skull
occipital bone markings
- foramen magnum
2. occipital condyles
foramen magnum
marking of occipital bone. opening in the skull where the spinal cord enters cranial cavity
occipital condyles
rounded projections lateral to the foramen magum that articulate with the 1st cervical vertera. (atlas)
sphenoid bone
bat shaped bone forming a portion of the base and side of the skull
sella turcica
turks saddle. depression in the superior surface, in front of the pituitary gland.
marking of sphenoid bone
greater wings
marking of sphenoid bone. lateral projections form part of the lateral eye orbit
lesser wings
lateral extensions anterior to the sella turcica
optic canals (foramen)
marking of sphenoid bone. openings for the passage of the optic nerves.
pterygoid process
marking of the sphenoid bone. downward projections.
ethmoid bone
anterior to sephnoid , forms the roof of the nasal cavity, upper nasal septum and part of the medial orbit.
(middle bone in the nose)
