B1.3 Flashcards
What is meant by metabolic rate?
The speed at which chemical reactions in your cells transfer energy from its chemical stores in food
What enzymes breaks down starch?
Amylase
What enzymes break down proteins?
What enzymes break down lipids?
Protease Enzyme
Lipase Enzyme
What is the word and symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen -> Carbon Dioxide + Water
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O
What is aerobic respiration?
When glucose reacts with oxygen in a series of chemical reactions to transfer energy from chemical stores in the food we eat.
Where does the energy transferred form respiration go to?
ATP store
What happens to the energy that is produced in respiration?
To synthesis larger molecules from smaller ones to make new cell material
For movement. Animals use is to contract muscle cells
To stay warm
When and where does aerobic respiration occur?
It occurs all the time in plant and animal cells and it occurs in the mitochondria.
What type of reaction is respiration?
It is an exothermic reaction as it transfers energy as heating to the surroundings
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose -> Latic Acid
What happens during anaerobic respiration?
When you heart rate can’t beat fast enough for you demands during exercise, energy is transferred from your chemical stores to your muscles
What is the word equation for fermentation?
Glucose -> Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide
