B2 Flashcards
What are the information your cell hold called?
Chromosomes
How many chromosomes do normal human beings have?
46
What is a gene?
A small packet of information that controls your characteristics
What is mitosis?
When a cell duplicates all of its contents including its chromosomes. This is how they reduce the amount of chromosomes when a baby is being born
How long does the cell cycle take?
Between a day and several years
What is the first part of the cell cycle?
Where the cell gets bigger and where the cell makes replicates of the DNA
What is stage 2 of the cell cycle?
Where mitosis is used to get a set of chromosomes and pull them to each dividing end
What is stage 3 of the cell cycle?
Where 2 cytoplasms and cell membranes are created to form two identical daughters
What type of unspecialised cell is in the embryo?
The stem cell
How do specialised cells use mitosis?
Specialised cells can divide by mitosis but they can only divide to the same type of cell
Why cant humans differentiate?
We could– because when we were embryos we had the ability to differentiate
Can plant cells differentiate?
Yes they can
How do you clone a plant?
By just cutting off a leaf, a new plant can differentiate on the leaf
What is a stem cell?
An undifferentiated cell that can turn into any cell
Why are stem cells so useful?
Because they can cure many diseases such as Parkinson’s
