B2.2 - Cell Organisation Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function.
What are exchange systems made up of?
Specialised cells.
What is differentiation and when does it occur?
Differentiation is the process by which cells become specialised for a particular job. Differentiation occurs during the development of a multicellular organsim.
Give three examples of tissue and what they do.
Muscular tissue - contracts to move whatever it’s attached to.
Glandular tissue - makes and secretes substances like enzymes and hormones.
Epithelial tissue - covers some parts of the body, e.g the inside of the gut.
What is an organ?
An organ is a group of different tissues that work together to perform a certain function.
What is the stomach organ made out of and why?
Muscular tissue - moves the stomach wall to churn up food.
Glandular tissue - makes digestive juices to digest food.
Epithelial tissue - covers the outside and inside of the stomach.
What is an organ system?
An organ system is a group of organs working together to perform a particular function.
Give an example of an organ system and list the organs involved.
The digestive system is an organ system that breaks down food in humans and other animals. It is made up of these organs:
Glands - produce digestive juices.
Stomach - food is digested.
Liver - produces bile.
Small intestine - food is digested and soluble food molecules are absorbed.
Large intestine - water is absorbed from u digested food, leaving faeces.
How are cells organised?
Large multicellular organisms have different systems inside them exchanging and transporting materials.
