B3 Flashcards

1
Q

What are enzymes?

A

Catalysts that are produced by living things, has an optimum temperature in which they work best in but if it gets to hot then the enzyme denatures

Q

What is photosynthesis?

A
  • The process of making glucose using water sunlight and carbon dioxide in producers to feed itsself
  • It can be affected by: co2 concentration, light intensity and temperature

Q

What is Phloem?

A

Transports food substances. Sieve tube elements, no nucleus, has a companion cell. MOVEMENT OF FOOD SUBSTANCES IS REFFERED TO AS TRANSLOCATION.
Sugars enter through active transport, then is pushed around by water , which enters the phloem by osmosis.

Q

What are the different stages of a food chain and how does each work in terms of energy?

A

Producers, primary consumers, secondary and tertiary
The pyramids of bio mass work in the way the producers recieve the most energy and the tertiary recieves the least

Q

What is bioaccumulation?

A

The increase over time of a substance in a food change

17
Q

What is random sampling?

A

Using a quadrat involves the placing of quadrats at random coordinates

18
Q

What is symbiosis?

A

Interaction between two organisms in a mutually beneficial way

19
Q

What is the xylem used for?

A

Transports wataer and minerals upwards from roots

20
Q

What is transpiration?

A

Evaporation of water from the aerial parts of a plant

21
Q

What is translocation?

A

the transporting of sugars around the body

22
Q

What are abiotic factors and biotic factors?

A
  • Abiotic factors- Non livinf parts of the environment that can affect organsims
  • Biotic factors-Any living factor that affects another organism or shapes the ecostem in some wayqqq
23
Q

What is eutrophication?

A

The process by which a body of water becomes enriched with nutrients, leading to excessive growth of algae and other aquatic plants
