b3-unit 1 Flashcards
what are epithelial tissues?
tissues that lines the surface of all organs and structures within the body
what are the three types of epithelial tissues?
squamous
columnar
endothelial
where are squamous tissues found?
in the lining of the alveoli
how do squamous cells help lining the alveoli in the lungs?
they provide a short diffusion pathway to allow rapid diffusion of oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide into the lungs
what are the adaptations of squamous epithelial tissues?
one cell thick
made from flattened specialised squamous epithelial cells, which form thin, smooth flat layer(s) that makes it ideal for rapid diffusion
where are ciliated columnar epithelial tissues found?
lining of the trachea
what do ciliated columnar tissues contain?
goblet cells
how does cilia and goblet cells work togetherto protect the lungs?
how can squamous epithelial tissues be damaged by smoking?
smoking irritates and causes inflammation and scaring in the epithelium tissues of lungs.
alveoli walls become thicker due to scaring and produce more mucus. damage to airsacs causes emphysema and lungs lose natural elasticity
what symptoms occur when squamous epithelial tissues become damaged?
breathlessness
persistent cough
phelgm
what are these symptoms associated with?
COPD- chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder
