B5 Flashcards
Homeostasis definition
Regulation of a stable internal environment
Ways the body keeps functioning properly
- blood glucose levels
- water levels
- temperature
Negative feedback mechanism (steps)
1. detecting change (receptors) 2. information processing (coordination centre) 3. response (effector)
Organs in homeostasis (functions) The brain The CNS The pancreas Effectors/muscles Glands
brain= control centre cns= sending signals pancreas= insulin effectors= moving glands= production of hormones
CNS
Made up of?
Brain
Spinal cord
When you touch something hot what reacts?
reflexes
What is a stimulus?
A change in the environment
What is a receptor cell?
A receptor cell detects changes in the environment
What happens at the coordination centre?
Information is received and processed. It then sends instructions to effector
Examples of the coordination centre organs?
Brain/spinal cord/ pancreas
What do effectors do?
They carry out a response and restore optimum level
Two types of effectors
Muscles and glands
Order of the automatic control system
Stimulus > receptor cells > co-ordination centre > effector
