Mechanical Soft tissue causes Nerve root compression Spinal cord injury Spondyloarthritis

What should be checked for in history of back/neck pain?
A
Systemic concerns History of malignancy/IVDU Neurological deficit Sphincter disturbance (bladder/bowel) Trauma/high-speed injury Refractory, thoracic, non-mechanical or pain at night <20 or >50yo Steroids/immunosuppressives Contusions/abrasions over spine

When should radiographs be taken for back/neck pain?
A
6-8 weeks if no concerning features

What is the preferred imaging modality for patients with non-mechanical pain or neuro compromise?
A
MRI
