Bacteria and Viruses Flashcards
an organism that consists of a single cell that does not have a nucleus.
Prokaryote
they are rod shaped with a large surface area, which helps them take in nutrients. But a large surface area can cause them to dry out easily.
Bacilli
They are spherical and they do not dry out as quickly as the rod-shaped bacteria.
Cocci
They are long and spiral shaped and they use flagella at both ends to move like a corkscrew.
Spirilla
they are a form of asexual reproduction in single-celled organisms by which one cell divides into two cells of the same size.
Binary Fission
a thick-walled protective spore that forms inside a bacterial call and resists harsh conditions.
Endospore
They take in nitrogen from the air and change it to a form that plants can use.
Nitrogen Fixation
the biological treatment of hazardous waste by living organisms.
Bioremediation
medicine used to kill bacteria and other microorganisms.
Antibiotic
bacteria that cause disease.
Pathogenic bacteria
a microscopic particle that gets inside a cell and often destroys the cell.
Virus
an organism from which a parasite takes food and shelter.
