Anticipatory - Postural adjustments are made before a movement is performed, experience is important

Adaptive - Improve adaptation or balance skills for varying task and environmental conditions

What are the functions of posture?

A
  • Maintains alignment of body segments
  • Anticipate change to allow engagement in voluntary movement
  • Helps to react to unexpected perturbations:
    mechanical perturbations (changes in force acting on body)
    informational perturbations (ambient light/sound)
