3
Q

What is theory of mind

A

The ability to understand that other people have independent minds of their own

Allows people to understand other people and predict what other people are likely to do or believe

Q

What was the aim

A

To investigate if the eyes task is a valid advanced test for theory of mind and if high functioning autistics / people with Asperger’s syndrome would find it difficult

7
Q

What was the dependant variable
How was it measured

A

The performance score out of 25 on the eyes task

Showing each participant 25 black and white standardised photographs of the eye Region of faces and asking them to make a choice between 2 mental state words to describe the feelings / thoughts of the person in the photo

8
Q

What was the design

A

Matched participants design

They were matched on age and intelligence

Those with AS selected for being normal intellinges (scoring more than 45 on WAIS-R test )

Those with Tourette’s took shorter versions of that test but had to score normal intelligence too

13
Q

Why were adults with Tourette’s syndrome used

A

If the tourettes adults passed the eyes task it would show that processing emotions from the eyes is linked to autism and no order disorder has that neurological basics so it increases internal validity

14
Q

Describe the procedure of the study

A

Participants took part in all 4 tasks (in a random order)

Eyes task
Gender recognition task
Happe’s strange stories
Basic emotion recognition task

In a quiet room at home, in researchers clinic or in researchers lab at Cambridge uni

15
Q

What was the Eyes task

A

Participants shown 25 pictures in black and white of the eye region

They had 2 words to choose from (foil and target)

The picture was shown for 3 seconds

16
Q

What was the Happes’s Strange stories task
What was the task useful for

A

Participants asked questions about the mentalistic stories and physical stories

It was used to validate the results from the eyes task as it was an established theory of mind test that was used to diagnose autism

17
Q

What was the gender recognition task
What was it used for

A

Identify gender of person in eyes task
Used to check if problems with the eyes task were due to general problems in face perception

It was a control

18
Q

What was the basic emotion recognition task
What was it used for

A

Judging photographs of whole faces displaying basic emotions

Used to check if any deficits in eyes task was due to basic emotion processing problems

19
Q

What were the results of the eyes task

A

Autism / AS - 16.3/25
Normal - 20.3/25
Tourette’s - 20.4/25

Mean scores

Tourette’s group performed as well as normal so deficits not due to frontal lobe dysfunction

20
Q

What were the results from the Happes’s Strange stories task

What does this mean

A

Tourette’s and normal made no errors

Autism / As made significant errors on mentalistic stories

Gives eyes task concurrent validity - compare new test with established test to see if they have similar results

21
Q

What was the results of the control tasks

A

No differences between groups so they didn’t do worse on eye task because of problems with facial perception or being unable to identify emotion

22
Q

What are 2 conclusions from the study

A

People with HFA or AS have theory of mind deficits which explains their difficulties in communication and social interaction

Eyes task is valid theory of mind test for adults

23
Q

Evaluate the research method

A

Quasi experiment - no manipulation needed, easy and effective, can look at things which otherwise would be hard to do so

Lack of control over Iv
More participants were male in the study - males in normal group performed better in eyes task

24
Q

Evaluate reliability

A

High external reliability - highly standardised and researches could repeat to get similar results

Ie all same pictures for 3 seconds
All images black and white

25
Q

Evaluate validity

A

Face validity (measure is appropriate for what it is used to measure) - baron c ensured the words used to describe the emotions were accurate by getting 4 judges 2m2f to discuss and decided on target and foil word

He then tested words on 8 judges (4m4f) - they had full agreement on target words

Concurrent validity (more than one measure of same variable used at same time to get similar results)
Eyes take and happes task

26
Q

Evaluate validity (n)

A

Low external validity (ecological)

Not generalisable because tasks very artificial and could have caused demand characteristics

In real life people see full face not just eyes

27
Q

Evaluate sample

A

Gender bias - AS group 13 male and 3 female

28
Q

Evaluate data

A

Quantitative - the scores
Lacks details but easy to analyse

29
Q

Evaluate ethics

A

Tested at home - less distressing
Gained consent

Difficulties in eyes task could be distressing

30
Q

Evaluate ethnocentrism

A

All British
Cant generalise to other cultures

31
Q

What was the key theme of the study

A

Understanding disorders
