BIO SAC Flashcards
why do diabetics always want water
High Blood Sugar (Hyperglycemia): When blood glucose levels are consistently high, the kidneys work harder to filter excess glucose from the blood and excrete it in the urine. This excessive urination, known as polyuria, can lead to the loss of fluids from the body, causing dehydration. To combat this, the body triggers a sensation of thirst to encourage the person to drink more water and rehydrate.
what happens diabetics don’t receive insulin
Rising Blood Sugar Levels: In the absence of insulin, glucose cannot enter the cells to be used for energy. This causes blood glucose levels to rise significantly, leading to hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).
Homeostasis
the relatively stable internal body environment despite changes in the external environment
Islets of Langerhans
beta cells (peptide hormone) : insulin
alpha cells: glucagon
