Biodiversity Flashcards
What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity is the amount of species in an environment and the amount of individuals in those species different species
what is species richness?
The amount of different species in an environment
what is species evenness?
Species evenness is the amount of individuals there are in each species in an environment
what is endemism?
when the species in the environment originate from the environment and not from a different environment
What is a niche, give examples
a niche is how an animal exploits their environment. For example, the armoured ground cricket sometimes eats the chicks of birds that fall from their nests in the trees, which is a selection pressure that could be an incentive for the chicks to learn how to fly to avoid being eaten by armoured ground cricket
what are the three adaptation types?
behavioural, anatomical and physiological
How can you tell the difference between adaptation types?
behavioural adaptations change how an organism in a species thinks and acts, anatomical adaptations are body structures that can be observed or seen when dissected, and physiological adaptations are features that help organisms survive and reproduce
What is natural selection?
the “struggle for existence” all organisms on earth face due to selection pressures, such as new predators, diseases or a changing environment
what is evolution?
a change in allele frequency in a population over time (generations)
what is a gene pool?
a gene pool consists of all the alleles of all the genes present in a population
