Biodiversity Flashcards
Biodiversity definition
The number of species and the number of individuals of each species in a given environment.
3 components of Biodiversity
Species diversity: the number of different species and the number of individuals of each species
Genetic diversity: this refers to the genetic variation between members of a species. The variation of alleles within a species (or a population of a species)
Ecosystem diversity: the range of different habitats within a particular area. The more different habitats there are the greater the species diversity.
Biodiversity of hotspots
- Biodiversity hotspots are areas of major biodiversity
- Found in tropics
- Due to high light intensity all year so high rate of photosynthesis = more different food
Biodiversity can vary over time - there are 3 ways this can happen:
1) Succession (change over time) - Change in organisms over time
