Bioenergetics Flashcards
What is the purpose of respiration?
The purpose of respiration is to release energy.
OR
Provide oxygen to the cells at a rate adequate to satisfy their metabolic needs.
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 => 6CO2 + 6H2O
Glucose + Oxygen => Carbon Dioxide + Water
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
glucose => Lactic acid
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O => C6H12O6 + 6O2
Carbon Dioxide + Water => Glucose + Oxygen
What is the name of the chemical that makes a leaf look green?
Chlorophyll
What are some limiting factors for photosynthesis?
Temperature, light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and chlorophyll
What kind of reaction is photosynthesis?
Endothermic
What kind of reaction is respiration?
Exothermic
What is metabolism?
Metabolism is the sum of all the reactions that happen in your body.
What is anaerobic respiration in plants called?
Fermentation
What is the equation for fermentation?
Glucose => ethanol + carbon dioxide
How to work out cardiac output?
cardiac output = stroke vol x heart rate
How does the body remove lactic acid?
Blood flowing through the muscles transports the lactic acid to the liver where it’s converted back to glucose. The oxygen debt is repaid once the lactic acid has been converted back to glucose and used in aerobic respiration. If the glucose made by the liver isn’t needed it will be converted back to glycogen and stored until needed.
What is oxygen debt?
An oxygen debt is the amount of extra oxygen your body needs to react with the build-up of ‘Lactic Acid’ and remove it from the cells.
How is the liver supplied with blood?
The liver is supplied with oxygenated blood through the hepatic artery and the hepatic portal artery which has blood rich in glucose and amino acids.
