Bioenergetics Flashcards
What does photosynthesis do
Produce glucose using light
What’s the word equation for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water —-> glucose + oxygen
What’s the balanced symbol equation for photosynthesis
6CO[2 ]+ 6H[2]0 —-> C[]6H[12]O[6] + 6CO[2]
Brackets = little numbers
What do plants use glucose for
-Respiration
-Making cellulose
-Making amino acids
-Stored as oils and fats
-Stored as starch
Why is glucose used in respiration
This transfers energy from glucose which enables the plant to convert the rest of the glucose into various other useful substances
Why is glucose used in making cellulose
For making strong plant cell walls
Why is glucose used in making amino acids
Glucose is combined with nitrate ions (absorbed from the soil) to make amino acids, which are then made into proteins
Why is glucose used in stored as oil or fats
Glucose is turned into lipids for storing seeds
Why is glucose used in stored as starch
Glucose is turned into starch and stored in roots, stems and leaves for use when photosynthesis isn’t happening, like in the winter
Why is starch stored and not glucose
Starch is insoluble which makes it better for storing as a cell with lots of glucose would draw in loads of water and swell up
What are the limiting rates of photosynthesis
-Light
-Temperature
-Amount of carbon dioxide
-Amount of chlorophyll in a plant
How is light a limiting factor
At night when’s there’s no light it can effect the rate as it provides the energy needed
How is temperature a limiting factor
In winter the cold temperatures can effect the rate as if it’s too low the enzymes needed might work more slowly. However if it’s too hot it can denature the enzymes
How is the amount of carbon dioxide a limiting factor
Even if you have the right temperature and right amount of light the amount of co2 can still effect the rate.
How is the amount of chlorophyll a limiting factor
If a disease, lack of nutrient or stress damage the chloroplasts not as much chlorophyll will be made meaning the rate is reduced as they can’t absorb as much light
