biological magnification Flashcards
1
Q
what is the magnification formula?
A
m= imagine size / actual size
2
Q
measurements:
A
1mm=1.000um
1cm= 10mm
1m= 100cm
3
Q
what are the three biological molecules?
A
- carbohydrates
- proteins
- lipids
4
Q
what does carbohydrates mean?
A
- contains carbon; oxygen; hydrogen
e. g :glucose is a simple sugar - long chains of simple sugars
- 2 glucose molecules that join together is a disaccharide (maltose)
- it is a polysaccharide ; eg: cellulose; starch & glycogen
5
Q
what does fats mean?
A
- it is a trisaccharide : 3 fatty chains and a glyceryl to make a fatty acid.
- fatty acids vary in size
- lipids are divided into oil and fats
6
Q
what does proteins mean?
A
- long chains of amino acids
- ‘r’ group= carbon chains
- it determines which amino acids we have.
7
Q
examples of proteins:
A
- amino acids
- peptides
- proteins
8
Q
what are the protein shapes?
A
- enzymes (active sites)
- antibodies ( white blood cells)
- shape of the antibody must match the shape of the antigen
