Biology-Paper2-Homeostasis and response Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis maintains optimal conditions for enzyme action throughout the body.
What are the internal conditions of the human body? (List three)
-Blood glucose concentration
-Body temperature
-Water levels
What are the two automatic control systems called and what are they responsible for?
Nervous system - involves nervous responses
Endocrine system - involves chemical responses
What are the two parts consist in the nervous system?
-the central nervous system – the brain and spinal cord
-the peripheral nervous system – nerve cells that carry information to or from the CNS
What is stimulus?
Change of environment
What detects stimuli?
Receptor
What does a coordinate centre consist of?
Brain, spinal cord or pancreas
What is the job of the coordinate centre?
Receives and processes information from receptors around the body
What is an effector?
The organ, tissue or cell that produces a response.
What is the job of an effector?
bring about responses, which restore optimum levels, such as core body temperature and blood glucose levels
What can the effector be in each system?
Nervous system - Muscle - contraction
Endocrine system - Glands - hormone release
What are nerve cells as known as?
Neurone
What are neurones adapted to?
They are adapted to carry electrical impulses from one place to another
What are the three main types of neurone?
Sensory, motor and relay
