Biomes Flashcards
Biome
An area with a particular climate along with the living and non living org9that comes with it. The area has specialized features which the organisms there has used to adapt and make a habitat eg camouflage to hide from Predators
There are 2 types of biomes
Aquatic and terrestrial
There are 7 terrestrial biomes in south Africa
Forests
Thickets
Fynbos
Nama karoo
Succulent karroo
Grassland
Savannah
Savannah
Wooded Grassland of SA that Covers 46, 6% of South Africa’s landscape and cover stretches from kalahari in the west to north and north east of Limpopo
Rainfall is 100mm and it has cool and dry winters and hot and et summers
Vegetation: large shurbs and baobab tree, grasses
Animal : big five, zebra, blue wildebeest
Grassland
Covers the high central plateau of South Africa, inland areas of kwazulu natal and mountain areas of the eastern cape province
Variety when it comes to Rainfall as there can be thunderstorm and hailstorms
Winters are cold with or without frost, fires are common
Summer is hot and wet
The soil is fertile
The plants are mostly grass there is rooigras
Animals are black wildebeest and springboks and blesbok
Forests
Smallest biome that covers the southern cape coastline-knysna and Tsitsikamma
Rainfall throughout the year is mainly in winter
The forests are cool and moist, humid
The soil is deep and fertile
The plants are outeniqua yellowwood, epiphytes, herbaceous and bulbous plants
Animal are blue duiker, knysna lourie and bush pig
Thickets
Along the coast of kwazulu natal and eastern cape
Rainfall is fairly high but not sustainable for forests
Soil is shallow and varies from sandy loam to sandy clay which is rich in lime
The plants varies from shrub lands in the low lands, evergreen and succulent short trees and plants with thorns, cape honeysuckle
Animals are elephants, African python and antelopes
Nama karoo
Covers most of the vast central plateau region of the Western and Northern Cape provinces
Semi desert that is flat and rugged
The ground is dry and rocky
No permanent flowing rivers
Rainfall is less than 500mm
Summers with high temperatures
Winter which is freezing cold
Soil is rich in lime, thin layer of soil over rocks and is infertile
Plants are xerophytes, stone plants and karoo daisy
Animals are black eared jackal, leopard and baboon
Succulent karoo
Occurs west of the Western escarpment through the western belt of the westerm cape and inland towards the little karoo
Is restricted to the year round and winter Rainfall areas and have the greatest summer aridity
Rainfall is dry, 50mm to 350 mm rainfall
Summers are hot and dry
Plants are xerophytic and namaqualand daisies and lichens
Animals are small rodents, mice squirrels and bat eared fox
Fynbos
Occupies 5,3% of South Africa occurring almost exclusively in the south western and Southern parts of the Western province
Winters are cold and wet with 210 to 300mm
Summers are hot and dry
Soil is infertile that is bleached of all its nutrients - inhibits growth of larger plants
68%f the plants are endemic to the fynbos biome
One of the six flora kingdoms in the world
Fires are common in summer needed to stimulate germination
Plants are protea, rooibos tea and olives, white milkwood
Animals are klipsspringer, caps mountain zebra, geometric tortoise
which biome in south Africa is the main tourist attraction in spring
Succulent Karoo

Succulent Karoo is a unique South African biome known for its wildflower extravaganza in spring. The vegetation is primarily made up of dwarf succulent shrubs.
South African biomes that are aquatic
Marine and coastal biomes, coral reefs, open sea zone, wetlands and estuaries
Marine and coastal biomes
Include the ocean and coral reefs along with estuaries
They include salty water
Algae live in water and produce oxygen and food
South African marine biomes contain 12% of the world’s fish species. Our coastline is 3000 km long
Water in the east coast is warm because of the warm Indian current and the water in the west us cold bc of the benguela current
The west coast are rich in nutrients which provides food for plankton and fish
The organisms are plankton - phytoplankton(algae) , zooplankton(microscopic crustaceans) sharks and dolphins
Concentration go nutrients
Coral reef
Shallow waters of the northern coast of kwazulu natal
Coral reefs are formed from calcium carbonate of tiny corral animals
Large biodiversity
Animals are micro organisms, invertebrates and sea urchins
Open seas zone
Open ocean and temperatures are generally cold and plankton main food provider for fish, dolphins and whales
