Q

what is the brains function

A

receives signals from senses
centre of all conscious awareness, brains outer layer (cerebral cortex) only 3mm thick and covers the brain. divided into two hemispheres

Q

what is the function of the spinal cord

A

an extension of the brain, passing messages to and from the brain, it connects nerves to the peripheral nervous system
is responsible for reflex actions

Q

what are the 4 main regions of the brain

A

occipital lobe- processes visual info

6
Q

what does the somatic nervous system do

A

maintains communication between CNS and outside world
voluntary actions occur
connects to external senses eg sight and touch

2 motor pathways : sympathetic NS
parasympathetic NS
( work against each other - antagonistic)

14
Q

how does the fight or flight response take place

A

hypothalamus in brain

activates the autonomic nervous system on sympathetic branch

activates the adrenal medulla

release of adrenaline and noradrenaline

body ready for flight or fight

PNS activates to return body back to normal

16
Q

what is a neuron

A

nerve cells that send messages all over your body

17
Q

what is the function of the sensory neuron

A

sends signals from sense organs

18
Q

what is the function of the relay neuron

A

connects neurons to other neurons

19
Q

what is the function of the motor neuron

A

sends signals to your muscles to tell them to move

20
Q

what hormone are produced by the adrenal glands

A

cortisol- regulates cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory functions

adrenaline - prepares body for flight or fight

21
Q

what are the hormones produced by the overies and testes

A

oestrogen- maintains growth of uterus lining
testosterone- regulates male secondary sec characteristics

22
Q

what hormone does thyroid produce

A

thyroxine- heart write and metabolism

23
Q

what is the process of synaptic transmission

A

electrical impulse travels along the axon of pre synaptic neuron

triggers the nerve ending of pre synaptic neuron to release chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) from vesicles within the nerve cell

diffuse across the synapse

bind whith receptors on the membrane of next neuron

stimulates post synaptic neuron to transmit electrical impulse

the neurotransmitters are reabsorbed into vesicles of presynaptic neuron

24
Q

what are excitatory neurotransmitters

A

increase the likelihood that an excitatory signal is sent to the post synaptic cell which is more likely to fire

25
Q

what are inhibitory neurostransmitters

A

off switches

decreases likelihood of neuron firing responsible for calming the mind and body and inducing sleep

26
Q

what is summation

A

the excitatory and inhibitory influence are summed
