Biopsychology ( Divisions Of Nervous System ) Flashcards
What is the human nervous system split into
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM AND PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYTEM
What does the CNS contain
Spinal cord and the brain
Role of spinal cord
facilitates the transferral of messages to and from the brain to the PNS (peripheral nervous system)
Job of the brain
Make sure that life is maintained. Many parts of the brain some of which are concerned with vital functioning
What is the peripheral nervous system split into
autonomic nervous system
Somatic nervous system
Role of somatic nervous system
controls breathing, heart rate and digestion
Role of autonomic nervous system
Carry sensory and motor info to and from spinal cord
What type of nerve does the autonomic nervous system use
parasympathetic
What is the parasympathetic nerve in charge of
Rest and digest
Signs of rest and digest response
contstrict pupils
Slow heart beat
Stimulate activity of stomach
Contract bladder
What type of nerve does the somatic nervous system use
Sympathetic
What is the sympathetic nerve in charge of
Fight or flight response
What are signs of the fight or flight response
Dilate pupils (expand)
Increased heart beat
Relaxed airways
Stop activity in stomach
Relaxed bladder
What is the evaluation of the peripheral nervous system
Taylor says that men react in a ‘fight or flight’ response, whereas girls have a ‘tend and befriend’ response
Why do girls reacts differently than boys when in a stressful situation (evaluation)
The production of oxytocin
Men lack in them therefore they stress more often
However women produce oestrogen at which amplifies the oxytocin which protects them from stress and move into a ‘tend and befriend’ response
Hence why girls tend to live longer than boys
