Biotechnology Flashcards
Biotechnology
The industrial use of living organisms (or parts of living organisms) to produce food, drugs or other products.
Primary Metabolites
Any metabolite which is formed as part of the normal normal growth of a microorganism. During growth the lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and waste products generated by the microorganism in order to grow in numbers are describes as primary metabolites. Eg. Amino acids, proteins, enzymes.
Secondary Metabolites
A metabolite produced by a microorganism, usually in the latter stages of growth as the culture ages, usually after main growth phase. Secondary metabolites are not specifically requires for the organism to grow. They usually have antibiotic properties.
Metabolite
A substance produced during cell processes.
