Q

What is the ABO group reverse typing test used for?

A

To confirm the group by looking for antibodies in the patient’s serum against known red cell antigens.

Q

What is the direct Coombs test/direct antiglobulin test?

A

Add antiglobulin to patient’s red cell sample and see if it agglutinates, showing antibodies are bound to patients cells.

Used to establish cause of haemolytic anaemia, investigate transfusion reaction and to diagnose HDN.

Q

What is the indirect antiglobulin test?

A

Looks for antibodies against foreign red cell antigens in the patient’s serum. Used in preparation for blood transfusion, during pregnancy and at delivery

16
Q

What factor is deficient in haemophilia A?

A

Factor VIII

17
Q

What factor is deficient in haemophilia B?

A

IX

18
Q

What is the pharmacological function of tranexamic acid?

A

Inhibits plasmin binding to fibrin and thus inhibits clot lysis.
Used as adjunctive therapy in bleeding disorders and to reduce bleeding in trauma patients.
