Blood Flashcards
What are the constituents of plasma used for transfusion
Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), cryoprecipitate, plasma for fractionation (not UK).
What is the volume of one unit of blood?
280ml
What are the indications for the use of cryoprecipitate?
Massive bleeding with low fibrinogen.
Rarely: hypofibrinogenemia
Which blood group is the universal recipient?
AB positive
Which blood group is the universal donor
O negative
What is the ABO group reverse typing test used for?
To confirm the group by looking for antibodies in the patient’s serum against known red cell antigens.
What is the direct Coombs test/direct antiglobulin test?
Add antiglobulin to patient’s red cell sample and see if it agglutinates, showing antibodies are bound to patients cells.
Used to establish cause of haemolytic anaemia, investigate transfusion reaction and to diagnose HDN.
What is the indirect antiglobulin test?
Looks for antibodies against foreign red cell antigens in the patient’s serum. Used in preparation for blood transfusion, during pregnancy and at delivery
What Hb level is a strong indication for transfusion?
<70g/L
What makes up a blood clot?
Fibrin mesh
Red blood cells
Platelets
Which test measures the intrinsic and common pathways in the clotting cascade?
APTT
Which test measures the extrinsic pathway in the clotting cascade?
PT
What does thrombin time measure?
Conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin in response to thrombin.
Are petechiae seen in coagulation disorders or platelet disorders?
Platelet disorders
Are ecchymoses/purpura seen in coagulation disorders or platelet disorders?
Coagulation disorders
